Famous Cellist,

I met Mstislav Rostropovich at my first Orchestra rehearsal of the Kurashiki Junior Philharmony Orchestra when I was 9 years old. I had no idea how famous he was at the time (not until College when I became music performance major). I was a talkative child, so I was talking to my friend, and he suddenly told me to raise my hand, so I did. I was to do Rock, Paper, Scissors with another friend, and I won. The prize was, to give flowers to Mr. Rostopovich as a representative from the Orchestra. After I gave him the flowers, he gave me a kiss on my forehead, it was quite shocking for 9 year old Japanese boy. Well, it was the first ever Orchestra rehearsal in my life.

Happy Father’s Day,

Happy Father’s Day. I thought to talk about my father today for Father’s Day post. My father, Kokichi, loves Jazz. He loves to play Jazz, and think about music theory and anything about Jazz. Jazz is the reason why my family came to USA. He wanted to study Jazz at the world’s best Jazz School, Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. He quit his steady job and moved the Tagawa family of 6, so that he can pursue his dream. I am almost at the age when he decided to come to America. I admire what he did, and I admire what he does still. He is active online, and he holds Jazz sessions. His love toward music is incredible, and with his support, I was able to start my music studies. Thank you Otousan(Father in Japanese). Here is his website: http://kokichit.blogspot.com/p/kokichikoh-tagawa-jazz-melodicapianica.html

Bowing with laptop,

One of the things I do during the summer, is to put bowing for upcoming concerts for the Sierra Vista Symphony Orchestra. The picture is an example of bowing. I figure out which way the bow should go, up (v) or down (∏) according to how I want the music to flow. For this I use to have put bowing with pencil, but these days for some of the music, I can use my surface pro laptop, and using computer pen (Surface pen). Of course, the bowing I put must be transferred to the real music that we play from by the librarian to all the string parts (Thank you!!). When our concert(s) get cancelled, all the prep work become in vain unless we can do the same program in the near future. Today was behind the scene of music.

Microsoft Surface Pro 7 – 12.3″ Touch-Screen – 10th Gen Intel Core i5 – 8GB Memory – 128GB SSD (Latest Model) – Platinum with Black Type Cover Microsoft Surface Pen Platinum Model 1776 (EYU-00009)

Internet Connection

Within my family, we use many computers at the same time, and sometimes the connection was really slow. I use surface pro computer and it does not have the connection for Ethernet cable. I learned that by having USB Ethernet Adapter, it becomes possible. I am using Amazon Basics Ethernet Adapter, and the connection is really fast when you connect through line. When I check the internet speed, it showed almost to the maximum download and upload speed. If you have many people in your family using wireless connection, and your speed is not up to par, having Ethernet Adapter might be a good way to go. Now, we can have two different Zoom meeting at the same time with really good connection.

AmazonBasics USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet Internet Adapter

Father’s Day Gift Idea

Today was BBQ day. I enjoy  BBQ these days. For tell you the truth, I did not enjoy BBQ for a long time, the biggest reason was : Responsibility of cooking the food correctly. Figuring out the grill takes time and where the hot spots are, so I won’t burn the food. The grill I have right now is pretty good, but I do wish to have more space, and consistency in heat. Now father’s day is coming up, and one of my wish list is a new grill. During the summer, it is really great to grill out, although it is pretty hot outside.
Father’s day is coming this Sunday, and I know some of you are thinking about gift ideas. Here is an idea for me.

First Blog

Hello, I am Toru Tagawa, Orchestra conductor and violinist. This is my first blog.  I will be writing about things I like, books, recordings, technologies, music and more.
I started walking about a week ago, and it has been great. Arizona gets really hot during the day, so I have to start walking before 7am. During my walks, I listen to a book on audio and just finished listening to this book, Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell. Great feature about this audio is the use of music and use of different people’s voices. This book really made me think about how much I assume to know about strangers, but I really don’t. A great audio!
Here is the Link to the Book/Audio on Amazon.

Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell
